Spam

Here is a letter that set off my Spam-dar today. I received it in my email "Junk Mail" box.

Hi there

Did you get my last email?
I saw your ad on Match.com and thought I would write.
I'm new here and I'm looking for a friend to get together, do fun things and such. I just moved near Edmond from Colorado about a month ago andI must say I really like it here.
I don't know anybody here, except for my roomate who moved here a while back. He's made some friends through the internet and he says there's a lot of nice people I might like here.
I don't have an email connection yet so I am using my roommate's. I am generally a happy person. Friends say I'm funny, casual, and easy going...makes me sound as exciting as pudding don't you think?
My roomate James thought I should email you and he showed me how to send it but nowI can't figure out how to attach my picture here. My friend and my picture are at www. On the surface, not a bad letter. I mean, it seems plausible...IF I hadn't received a very, VERY similar, if not identical, letter from a guy named "Mark" a year ago.

The stories seemed very similar: Guy is new to town, has no Internet connection and is borrowing his roomies, has profile on selectafriendlymatch.com, found me on match.com...even the PS..."I don't know if we'll be using this address anymore so call me and see where this goes."

This reeks of spam to me.

    Wow, I just got almost the same e-mail, but it was supposed to go to some other lady on Yahoo Personals with my hotmail account name. I sent him an e-mail saying that he sent it to the wrong address and this is what it sent me:

    I'm sorry, Andrew and I have turned on the auto response for this email address,he sent out a few emails to some people from here and we won't be checking this address anymore. He is going to get his emails through www.Selectafriendlymatch.com, this way he won't have to sign in everytime to
    pick up his mail, it will be forwarded to my computer.

    I've also gotten the same letter, the "From a Girl" version.

    I received it twice; the first time I got it i noticed the phone number has eight digits in it.

    I asked an ex-girlfriend of mine, who’s really ungodly smart where telephones are concerned, to see if it minus one digit was a valid number. (It could just be a girl with chubby fingers syndrome, I reasoned.)

    She found that by removing the second five, it was a valid cell phone number in "Denver Colorado”, (Where she said she mover from in my version) or a valid cell phone number in “Davison Michigan”, (Twenty minute drive from where I live).

    I'm assuming that whoever is writing this spam is unaware of it and that this little tidbit is just a coincidence.

    If you write back to the girl, there is an automated response telling you that she and her roommate have stopped using this address and if you want to make contact go to http://www.selectafriendlymatch.com/ so you can see her profile there 3042473, it cost way too much money. This is where spam turns to scam.

    Does any one know the legality of this kind of manipulation? And if so is there anyone important and powerful who would care?

    Just one more thing, I did once have a profile on Friend finder, Found it to be a useless sight, received lots of spam from girls wanting me to see them on there web cams for money. I tried to delete my profile to stop receiving email, I tried, but it would not let me, so I changed my profile to:

    “I tried to delete this profile, they would not let me, If I receive any more e-mail from this profile I may kill myself and leave a suicide note telling my family to send you the photo of my rotting carcass.”

    SO I thought it was possible that she had read my profile and been amused, but bothered that she would think to email me without talking about my impending suicide.

    And just to let you know, I did not end up killing myself; and eventually I stopped receiving email from friend finder.

    Yup...unfortunately this stuff happens...more often than we think. What's sad is that I also was almost taken in. I was encouraged by some good friends to go for it (the first time, a couple of years ago.) Glad I didn't.

    hey i just got the same email.. how random. and i too noticed that the phone number was not long enough.. its crazy that they are always from Denver? i did a search on yahoo for the member number and i found ur blog. im glad i checked that before i did anything. :-p

    It seems that there are several versions of that email out...I think that whoever does that sets a macro to the reciever's home town, etc.

    I wonder what people in Denver recieve? "Hi, I just moved to Denver from Denver..."

    I also received the e-mail, I'm from Michigan. The e-mail gives a profile number that actually refers to a profile on www.selectafriendlymatch.com.

    I suspected some sort of Spam-foolery so I searched google and hit upon your blog. It is confirmed, Janiec is an internet attention whore!!!! I thought I was special. My dreams of romance have been shattered....sigh

    hi I just recieved the spam letter. I almost believed it. I had wrote part of a letter to send to the person , but i saved on my draft first cause i wanted to reread the letter than i tried looking for the photo of the person and ended up here. So I deleted the letter and the saved draft.

    Hi! Does anyone know what the actual POINT of this spam is? I mean,you have a useless 8 digit number and a non-existent website. I just don't get how they are supposed to make money on this.

    But of course I still haven't figured out why there are so many "splog" comments are out there that put words like "porn" and "viagra" over and over without any actual links to anything. So I honestly don't have a clue what this email is actually supposed to accomplish. But anyway that is my 02c.

    Oh,and I get about one a month from "christie" even though I've never been a member of any of the sites my profile is supposedly on. This has to be one of the weirdest spams I've ever gotten.

    Just got the same one. Did anyone ever try to text it. I'm almost curious to actually try. I have the whole voicemail thing on my cell that lets you send any number to a disco message... but also dont want to start getting random text messages from multiple numbers... wonder if those type of spam are going to get worse when trillian or whatever lets your start sending straight to text for free...

    found a site once upon a time that would let you do that... and those text's can cost if u dont pay for the unlimited... so this going to be an evil form of spam if that is the point. I really don't want to start getting cell phone spam.

    Anyway Long comment to just ramble in. Just curious as everyone says yes this is the message... but not the point of the spam. my question also. Where is the catch. Noone actually did it?

    There are a couple big problems with this email:

    1. I'M A STRAIGHT FEMALE!!!

    2. I've never used the FriendFinder site and have never been on it before.

    I've had a boyfriend for quite a while and haven't used the internet dating sites in well over a year. I looked this up on Snopes.com and got nothing. This email REALLY annoys me and I wish there was some way to prevent them from doing this.

    @Allie-I'm afraid you just have to get used to it. I have been getting that same exact email for going on 2 years now. What the point of it is or how they are supposed to make money on it? I have no freaking clue. But like you I have never been on the supposed site and I received my first one of those emails long before I was ever on ANY social sites.

    So has anyone figured out what the point of these are? I mean I get the "make money now" or the fake penis pills or the 419s and how they make money, but I can't for the life of me figure out how this spammer is supposed to get paid with a non functional phone number and a site that doesn't exist.
